If you have done any network programming before it would be cool if you could make some VMKs where you explain how you can set up a client/server kind of thing for the game engine.

okay,

I'm starting the physics engine VMK's now, but I'll start thinking about putting together some network ones as well.

I can make some video's showing how to setup UDP and TCP/IP communication, how to setup a server and client .... hmmm what else.
Maybe I'll integrate it into a simple game demo too so you can see how a multiplayer network game would work.

Anything else you can think of?

Some way to communicate with other players like a chat( in the console or something ) would be good. Network programming is kind hard to start out just like this so VMK's on this would be great.

Do not forget to teach them how to make there own packets
because some people would like to send specific data packets as well
instead of just text or something like that

it would probably be better to leave that for later and finish the physics/fps game vmks before launching into networking (opening up another complicated area to ponder over)

Yes. Finish the (physics, fps game) before launching into networking. We give the proposal here (network - multiplayer, chat etc.).

Bump!

I know you're still working on ghost, but I'm hoping you'll morph it into multiplayer :D

When I finish Ghost Toast, Network programming is next on my list.

Would be nice to know how to broadcast over network as I think it would be a key function to make a lobby (on LAN).

Also another thing I find a bit difficult is how to reach friends over the internet and all it's common problems.
For example: Is there a way to have a server behind a firewall? When there is no problem to play with your friends over battle.net.

Marek: What kind of API do you have in mind for these VMKs? (Personally I would prefer a platform independent API.)

I haven't picked which API I will be using for the VMK yet.

I'm actively working on the Network VMK series right now. The first VMK should be uploaded sometime in April explaining what I will be covering in the series.

Interesting idea, I hadn't thought of that. I'm building a different game right now which will be using the network manager that is being developed in the VMK series.

I don't want to reveal to much about the game before it is released, but it will be an action/strategy game.

I finished implementing the chat system last month so now I need to find some time to sit down and record all those video's. December is pretty busy for me so I don't know if I'll have time to get them out to everyone before the end of the year.

Anything new about the Action / Strategy VMK's?
Also will this be using a newer version of opengl?

Progress is slow and steady. Last week I got the shader engine up and running rendering 3D objects on the screen. The next thing on my list is to start porting over the old OpenGL engine code to the new system.

Hi Marek,

Sorry to trouble you, but may I know approximately when the new game engine will be released please? I need to make a choice whether to purchase the old series or wait for the new one.

Thanks and regards

Based on my current development schedule, the shader engine probably won't be ready until the fall of this year. Note, you'll need to know everything from the Game Engine series to follow the Shader Engine because I'm going to be only presenting new material and relying on people to know how to do everyting that I show in the first game engine series already.
